Important Dates:

November 10th - Remembrance Day Celebration - Come join us for our Remembrance Day Celebration at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 10th. The celebration will take place in our gymnasium and will be presented by Mr. Denomy's grade 7/8 class.

November 11th - Remembrance Day - As we remember our fallen heroes, Hillside School will be closed for the day.

November 18th - Family Literacy Day - Families are invited to join us in the classroom for our literacy block (90minutes). More information about specific classroom activities and the literacy block will be sent home by your child's teacher. More information will be posted on our website under the 'classrooms' link, as well.

November 28th - Progress Reports - Progress reports will go home with students.

November 30th - 1/2 Day & Parent Teacher Interviews - Teachers will be available to meet with parents in the afternoon from 1:00-3:00 and 4:00-6:00p.m., to discuss progress reports

December 2nd - Awards Assembly - Come join us for our 'Honesty' awards assembly, beginning at 2:00p.m. There will also be a short presentation put on by Miss Love's grade 1 and Ms. Padfield's grade 2 classes.

December 16th - Media Literacy Day - All Hillside students will be treated to a movie at the Lambton 9 Cinemas, as part of our media literacy!

December 21st - Hillside Christmas Dinner - All Hillside students will be treated to a Christmas dinner in the school gymnasium. The dinner will begin at 12:30 p.m.

December 23rd - Christmas Holidays - This is our last school day before the Christmas holidays begin. We wish everyone a 'Merry Christmas' and a 'Happy New Year'. Be safe and we look forward to seeing everyone back to school on January 9, 2012.

January 9th - Return to School - Welcome back to school and to a new year; 2012!

Math- Decimals
– represent, compare, and order whole numbers and decimal numbers from 0.001 to 1,000,000, using a variety of tools (e.g., number lines with appropriate increments, base ten materials for decimals)
– demonstrate an understanding of place value in whole numbers and decimal numbers from 0.001 to 1,000,000, using a variety of tools and strategies (e.g. use base ten materials to represent the relationship between 1, 0.1, 0.01, and 0.001)
– add and subtract decimal numbers to thousandths, using concrete materials, estimation, algorithms, and calculators
– use estimation when solving problems involving the addition and subtraction of whole numbers and decimals, to help judge the reasonableness of a solution

Lang. Arts- Narrative Fiction
- generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience
- draft and review writing, using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience
- use editing, proofreading, and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of language conventions, to correct errors, refine expression, and present work effectively

Science- Air/Flight
- assess the societal and environmental impacts of flying devices that make use of properties of air

Soc. Stud- Early European Explorers
– identify technological developments and cultural factors that assisted and promoted the exploration of North America (e.g., caravel ships, improved navigational instruments, the quest for new lands)
– identify some present-day issues concerning First Nation peoples that relate to results of early contact (e.g., the effect of new technologies on First Nation cultures; land claims)

Phys. Ed- Co-op Games
- demonstrate the principles of movement while refining movement skills

Art- Colour, Shape and Design
- exploring forms and cultural contexts of a variety of art forms, styles, and techniques from the past and present, and their sociocultural and historical contexts

Music- Jazz
- creating and performing the creative process and perform music for a variety of purposes, using the elements and techniques of music
